Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed readiness for a truce with Russia, provided Moscow agrees to the same terms.
This comes after U.S. President Donald Trump abruptly halted military aid to Ukraine, further straining relations between the two countries.
Zelensky Calls for Ceasefire in Air and Sea
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Zelensky stated that Ukraine is prepared to negotiate peace and proposed an immediate halt to aerial and naval hostilities.
“Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer. Nobody wants peace more than Ukrainians. My team and I stand ready to work under President Trump’s strong leadership to get a peace that lasts,” he wrote.
He outlined a “truce in the sky and sea”, which would ban missile strikes, long-range drone attacks, and bombings targeting civilian infrastructure such as energy facilities.
Clash Between Zelensky and Trump
The peace proposal follows a heated confrontation between Zelensky, Trump, and U.S. Vice President JD Vance in the Oval Office.
Their disagreement was the culmination of escalating tensions, with Trump previously calling Zelensky a “dictator,” while the Ukrainian leader accused him of falling for Russian “disinformation.”
“Our meeting in Washington did not go as planned. It is regrettable that it happened this way. It is time to make things right. We would like future cooperation and communication to be constructive,” Zelensky stated.
Ukraine Offers U.S. Exclusive Access to Resources
Despite the diplomatic fallout, Zelensky reiterated Ukraine’s willingness to work with the U.S. He also offered Washington preferential access to Ukraine’s natural resources and minerals, saying Kyiv is ready to finalize the deal “at any time and in any convenient format.”
The agreement was initially set to be signed during Zelensky’s visit to Washington but was disrupted following his unexpected departure from the White House.
What Lies Ahead?
With Ukraine seeking a diplomatic resolution and offering strategic resources to the U.S., it remains to be seen whether Russia will accept the proposed truce.
Meanwhile, the U.S. administration has yet to clarify its stance on future support for Ukraine.
