A senior officer of the Ogun State Police Command has revealed that the reckless driver who killed Professor Oladipupo Ademuyiwa, a biochemistry lecturer at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), is suspected to be a Yahoo boy (internet fraudster).
The tragic hit-and-run accident occurred on Sunday, February 16, 2025, along the Kemta-Somorin axis of Ajebo Road, Ogun State. The driver fled the scene, and all efforts by the police to trace him have so far been unsuccessful.
Police Intensify Search for the Hit-and-Run Driver
An officer who spoke to NIGPOST on Tuesday disclosed that law enforcement is actively working to track down the suspect.
“An eyewitness reported the incident, and we arrived at the scene, but the driver had already escaped,” the officer said.
“The witness described the suspect as a young man who appeared to be a Yahoo boy, judging by his reckless driving and behavior.”
Unfortunately, a CCTV camera near the scene was found to be non-functional, limiting the police’s ability to obtain footage of the suspect’s vehicle.
The police have alerted nearby mechanic workshops and other divisions in the area to be on the lookout for any accident-damaged vehicle matching the eyewitness’s description.
However, no leads have been confirmed yet.
“We are leaving no stone unturned. The suspect will be brought to justice,” the officer assured.
FUNAAB Mourns Professor Ademuyiwa
In a heartfelt statement shared on its Instagram page on Monday, FUNAAB expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Professor Ademuyiwa and extended condolences to his family and colleagues.
“The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, deeply regrets to announce the passing of Professor Oladipo Ademuyiwa of the Department of Biochemistry, College of Biosciences.
The university community mourns this great loss and extends heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, and loved ones.”
Community Leaders Demand Government Action
Residents of the Ajebo Road Housing Estate Community Development Association (CDA) have criticized the government for failing to install speed breakers on Prof. Wole Soyinka Road, where the fatal accident occurred.
CDA Chairman Ayo Ajasa condemned the reckless driving culture in the area and urged Governor Dapo Abiodun to take urgent action.
“This tragic and avoidable loss could have been prevented if the government had installed speed bumps as we had repeatedly requested,” Ajasa said.
He outlined the community’s demands, which include:
✅ Immediate installation of speed breakers along Wole Soyinka Road.
✅ Lorry barriers to regulate vehicle movement.
✅ Clear traffic signage to warn motorists against reckless driving.
✅ Stricter law enforcement to curb excessive speeding.
“Another accident occurred within 24 hours of this tragic incident. This road remains a death trap,” Ajasa stressed.
Ogun State Government Responds
In response to the criticism, the Ogun State Government denied responsibility for Professor Ademuyiwa’s death, stating that reckless driving—not government inaction—was to blame.
“It is unfair and misleading to blame the government for this accident. The driver acted irresponsibly, and we urge the police to ensure he is brought to justice,” said Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Media and Strategy.
