Yahaya Bello’s Bail Set at N500 Million, But He Remains in Custody

Yahaya Bello, the former governor of Kogi State, will remain in Kuje Correctional Centre until the conditions of his bail are fully met. Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja granted him bail with a sum of N500 million and two sureties who must own property within the court’s jurisdiction.

While delivering the ruling, Justice Nwite emphasized that bail decisions are at the discretion of the court, noting that the defendant’s past conduct influenced his decision. The court outlined several conditions for the bail, including the deposit of Bello’s international passport and recent passport photos.

Bello is facing 19 charges related to money laundering, misappropriation of public funds, and breach of trust, amounting to over N80 billion. The case has been adjourned for further hearings in 2025.
