The political rivalry between Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reignited ahead of the 2027 presidential elections.
Wike’s media aide, Lere Olayinka, recently declared that his principal would once again work against Atiku’s presidential bid, just as he did in 2023.
According to Olayinka, Wike played a key role in Atiku’s defeat and will ensure history repeats itself.
His statement was a direct response to Atiku’s recent remarks about his choice of a running mate in the 2023 election.
The former VP revealed that a committee had recommended three potential candidates—ex-Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, Wike, and ex-Akwa Ibom Governor Udom Emmanuel—but he ultimately chose Okowa.
Atiku’s Camp Fires Back
Paul Ibe, Atiku’s Special Adviser, wasted no time in countering Wike’s camp. He criticized Wike for focusing on 2027 while Nigerians were struggling under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership.
“Atiku is more concerned about nation-building than engaging in political distractions.
The real question is, are Nigerians better off today than they were in 2023?” Ibe questioned, pointing to rising living costs and economic hardship.
The Bigger Picture: 2027 Presidential Race
Beyond the Wike-Atiku feud, the race for 2027 is already heating up. Atiku recently announced the formation of an opposition coalition aimed at unseating Tinubu.
Political analysts speculate that former Labour Party candidate Peter Obi and ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai may play key roles in the movement.
However, Atiku has remained tight-lipped about whether he will contest again, stating that building a strong political platform is the priority before any decisions are made.
With the 2027 elections still years away, the battle lines are already being drawn, setting the stage for yet another fierce political showdown in Nigeria.
