The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has disclosed that he personally pushed for the removal of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara. However, he says it was President Bola Tinubu’s intervention—through the declaration of a state of emergency—that ultimately saved the embattled governor.
Wike made this revelation on Friday during a media chat in Abuja, where he opened up about the deepening political crisis in Rivers State.
“To be honest, I wasn’t pleased with the state of emergency decision. I actually wanted Fubara completely removed from office,” Wike stated. “But the president, by invoking the state of emergency, saved him from being ousted.”
It will be recalled that on March 18, 2025, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Fubara, his deputy, and the state legislature. He then appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as the state administrator.
Wike emphasized that Fubara’s position was already untenable and that the intervention from Tinubu altered the course of what would have been his removal.
“The governor was already out; politically, he was gone,” Wike said. “So when people talk, they should actually be thanking the president. Every morning they should go and say, ‘Mr. President, thank you for saving us.'”
He also revealed that he is open to peace talks but accused Fubara’s advisers of influencing the governor to reject reconciliation.
