Wike Meets Suspended Rivers Assembly Members in UK Over Dinner
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has hosted suspended members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for a dinner in the United Kingdom.
The private dinner, which took place on Monday, comes shortly after Wike met with some of his political allies in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Sunday.
The event was made public by the minister’s media aide, Lere Olayinka, through a Facebook post. According to him, the lawmakers are currently in the UK for a legislative capacity-building programme.
“Yesterday, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, hosted Rivers State House of Assembly members who are in the United Kingdom for Legislative Capacity Building, to a dinner. Wike left Nigeria on Sunday night after visiting his political friends and associates in Port Harcourt,” Olayinka wrote.
These lawmakers had previously been suspended by President Bola Tinubu following a declaration of emergency rule in Rivers State, citing security concerns. The suspension also affected Governor Sim Fubara, who was sidelined for six months.
The political tension between Wike and Fubara has deeply affected governance in Rivers State, leading to a constitutional crisis.
Although the Supreme Court eventually ordered the reinstatement of the lawmakers and instructed Governor Fubara to present the 2024 budget before the Martins Amaewhule-led Assembly, the governor was blocked from accessing the Assembly complex when he attempted to do so.
This UK meeting adds a new chapter to the unfolding political drama in Rivers State, as both factions continue to grapple for control.
