Former Minister of Transport, Chief Abiye Sekibo, has revealed that he and other political leaders in Rivers State shifted their support from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, citing the influence of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Speaking in Port Harcourt on Thursday during the inauguration of the rehabilitated Borokiri Fire Service Station, Sekibo emphasized that Fubara convinced them to align with Tinubu.
Rivers’ Commitment to the Central Government
Addressing President Tinubu, Sekibo reaffirmed Rivers State’s historical support for the federal government.
“Mr. President, we, the Rivers people, have always worked with the government at the center. Governor Siminalayi Fubara has convinced us that we must stand with you, and we do,” he said.
He dismissed claims that Fubara was surrounded by Atiku’s loyalists, arguing that similar political alignments exist in Abuja.
“The governor has assured us that standing with you is the right path. The elections declared you our President, and just as Rivers people support their governor, we support you,” Sekibo stated.
Fubara’s Leadership and Call for Tinubu’s Support
Sekibo praised Fubara’s leadership, noting that despite challenges, he prioritized the state’s welfare and maintained peace.
“When the state’s funds were withheld, Fubara ensured that services remained active and that no crisis arose. He has proven to be an ally of the President, and I urge you, Mr. President, to stand with him,” he added.
Sekibo also acknowledged that the Supreme Court’s judgment had unsettled the people, but he assured them that Fubara remained committed to upholding peace in Rivers State.
Governor Fubara’s Vision for Rivers
In his remarks, Governor Fubara reiterated that the purpose of governance is to serve the people.
“We are elected to provide essential services, and showcasing our work is necessary. Some leaders commission boreholes and publicize them. For us, we focus on critical infrastructure,” he said.
He emphasized the importance of rehabilitating the Borokiri Fire Service Station, given the area’s dense population and frequent fire outbreaks.
“This facility will ensure a swift response to fire incidents. More importantly, we are glad to see the excitement on our people’s faces. This is why we will continue to do more,” Fubara added.
