New Jersey Immigration Crackdown Sparks Outrage
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents raided businesses in Newark, New Jersey, detaining undocumented migrants and US citizens, including a military veteran.
The city’s mayor, Ras Baraka, condemned the act, calling it a violation of constitutional rights.
Newark, known for its sanctuary policies protecting migrants, has come under scrutiny following intensified immigration enforcement under former President Donald Trump’s administration.
Baraka criticized ICE agents for not producing a warrant during the raid and accused them of unlawfully targeting individuals.
Violation of Citizens’ Rights
“One of the detainees is a US military veteran who endured the humiliation of having his military credentials questioned,” Baraka stated, highlighting the human rights concerns.
He added, “Newark will not stand by while people are unlawfully terrorized. This act blatantly disregards the US Constitution.”
The mayor refrained from naming the businesses involved, while ICE and the White House have yet to comment.
A History of Resistance
Baraka, an outspoken critic of Trump’s immigration policies, has previously reinforced Newark’s sanctuary status through an executive order.
Sanctuary jurisdictions limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities, aiming to protect undocumented immigrants from deportation.
In 2022, an estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants resided in the US, with 44% living in states with sanctuary laws.
Newark remains a vocal opponent of federal crackdowns on these communities.
Arrests in Sanctuary Cities
Recent media reports indicate that federal law enforcement and ICE agents arrested nearly 500 undocumented migrants in sanctuary cities, including New York and New Jersey.
These arrests targeted individuals wanted for outstanding crimes, further escalating tensions between federal agencies and sanctuary jurisdictions.
