US Reacts to the Heartbreaking Murder of Kaduna Priest, Calls for Justice

The United States Mission in Nigeria has expressed deep sorrow and outrage over the tragic killing of Reverend Father Sylvester Okechukwu, a beloved priest who was kidnapped on Tuesday and later found dead in Kaduna State.

Father Okechukwu served as the pastor of St. Mary Catholic Church in Tachira, Kaura Local Government Area, and his untimely death was confirmed on Wednesday, March 6, 2025, by the Catholic Diocese of Kafanchan.

A Tragic Loss Felt by Many

In a heartfelt message shared on X (formerly Twitter), the US Mission described the murder as senseless and brutal, offering condolences to the grieving family, congregation, and community.

“The US Mission is deeply distressed by the brutal and senseless killing of Reverend Father Sylvester Okechukwu in Kaduna State, Nigeria. We strongly condemn this horrific act of violence.”

The mission emphasized that no one should have to live in fear, especially those who dedicate their lives to serving others.

US Calls for Swift Justice

Beyond expressing sympathy, the US Mission is demanding action, urging Nigerian authorities to ensure that the perpetrators are held accountable.

“We call on the authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice.”

The call for justice echoes the sentiments of many Nigerians who are deeply concerned about rising insecurity and the targeting of religious leaders and communities.

Security Concerns Continue to Grow

Father Okechukwu’s heartbreaking death is yet another grim reminder of the security crisis in Kaduna and across Nigeria.

Attacks on priests, religious leaders, and innocent citizens have become all too common, leaving many fearful for their safety.
