UN Raises Alarm Over HIV/AIDS Crisis
The United Nations AIDS agency (UNAIDS) has issued a dire warning, stating that over six million people could die from HIV/AIDS in the next four years if the United States withdraws its global funding for treatment programs.
Speaking in Geneva on Friday, Christine Stegling, Deputy Executive Director of UNAIDS, expressed deep concerns about the future of these programs, despite a recent waiver placed on HIV/AIDS initiatives within the US foreign aid freeze.
Funding Cuts Threaten Global HIV Treatment
The crisis began when US President Donald Trump’s administration froze foreign aid funding for 90 days upon taking office on January 20, 2025.
Although the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) was granted a waiver for humanitarian assistance, Stegling emphasized that uncertainty remains.
“There is a lot of confusion, especially on the community level, about how the waiver will be implemented. We’re already witnessing disruptions in treatment services,” she stated.
Stegling further warned that if PEPFAR funding is not reauthorized between 2025 and 2029, the world could see a 400% increase in AIDS-related deaths, translating to 6.3 million lives lost.
Severe Consequences of Aid Disruptions
The funding freeze is already having devastating effects. In Ethiopia, for instance, 5,000 public health workers funded by US assistance have lost their jobs.
Many community health clinics, which rely entirely on US government funding, are now struggling to provide essential services.
Stegling also expressed fears that patients might stop seeking treatment, leading to a rise in new HIV infections worldwide.
“Any budget cut, pause, or delay in funding will have a catastrophic impact,” she warned, calling on UN member states to intervene.

As the future of HIV/AIDS funding remains uncertain, health advocates stress the urgent need for international collaboration to prevent a humanitarian disaster.
