UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has extended his congratulations to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump ahead of his second-term inauguration, expressing optimism that the strong relationship between the UK and the U.S. will thrive in the years to come.
Trump is set to take the oath of office on Monday, marking eight years since he was first sworn in as U.S. President.
Starmer praised the “depth of friendship” between the two nations and emphasized his commitment to collaborating with Trump for the benefit of both countries, ensuring success and prosperity for people on both sides of the Atlantic.
At a rally the night before the inauguration, Trump declared that his supporters had “built a new American majority” that would guide the country to long-term success.
Ahead of the inauguration, UK politicians, including Nigel Farage, have gathered in Washington, D.C. Despite this, concerns persist over the potential impact of Trump’s second term on global economies, particularly if he follows through on his plans to impose tariffs.
In his Sunday evening statement, Starmer highlighted the long-standing and vital bond between the UK and the U.S., stating, “For centuries, the relationship between our two nations has been one of collaboration, cooperation, and enduring partnership.”
Starmer recalled his September meeting with Trump at Trump Tower in New York, where both leaders discussed the importance of deepening the transatlantic relationship.
Starmer emphasized that their shared commitment to global challenges would strengthen the alliance and create new opportunities for growth.
“I look forward to continuing our work together to ensure the peace, prosperity, and security of our two great nations,” Starmer added.
“The special relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States will continue to flourish for years to come.”
