Real Madrid has been hit with a €30,000 fine by UEFA for alleged discriminatory behavior by their fans during their Champions League play-off match against Manchester City on February 19, 2025.
UEFA Sanctions Real Madrid Over Fan Conduct
Despite no incidents being reported by journalists or captured on television during Madrid’s 3-1 victory at the Santiago Bernabéu, UEFA found the club’s supporters guilty of violating Article 14 of its disciplinary regulations, which bans racism, discriminatory behavior, and propaganda.
As part of the punishment, UEFA has also imposed a suspended sanction that could see at least 500 adjacent seats at the 78,297-capacity stadium closed if any further violations occur within the next two years.
Similar Sanctions for Top European Clubs
Real Madrid is not alone in facing UEFA’s crackdown on fan misconduct.
Several national teams and clubs, including Spanish rivals Barcelona and Atlético Madrid, are under similar suspended sanctions for related offenses.
This latest development raises concerns about the enforcement of anti-discrimination policies in European football, as governing bodies continue to hold clubs accountable for the behavior of their supporters.
