US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order that bans gender transition procedures for minors under the age of 19.
This marks his latest action in a series of moves aimed at restricting transgender rights. The order, signed on Tuesday, targets treatments like puberty blockers, hormones, and gender-altering surgeries, labeling them as harmful to children.
The new policy, which echoes Trump’s stance on a “gender binary,” directs the federal government to stop funding or promoting any form of gender transition for minors.
This includes restrictions on Medicaid, Medicare, and the military health insurance programs that cover millions of children across the country.
The order also opens the door for legislation that would allow parents and children to sue doctors who perform these procedures.
Although there’s no federal ban on gender-affirming medical treatments for minors, Trump’s executive order adds pressure for stricter state laws.
Several Republican-led states have already put laws in place to restrict such medical care.
The Supreme Court of the United States has also weighed in, with a December hearing that considered a law in Tennessee that prohibits puberty blockers and hormone therapy for children under 18.
This move is part of a broader national debate over transgender rights and has sparked reactions across the political spectrum.
Trump has made it clear that under his administration, the government will work to prevent what he describes as “dangerous and life-altering” gender transition procedures.
