U.S. President Donald Trump is set to sign a new batch of executive orders on Tuesday, with reports suggesting he will begin fulfilling his campaign promise to dismantle the federal education department.
While Trump cannot fully abolish the department without Congressional approval, U.S. media reports indicate he will take steps to weaken its influence from within through executive action.
White House Remains Tight-Lipped
The White House confirmed Trump is scheduled to sign several executive orders but has not disclosed their specific contents.
This move follows a broader effort to reduce the size of the federal government, a cause also championed by tech billionaire Elon Musk.
Musk’s Role in Federal Restructuring
On Monday, Musk’s newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) played a role in shutting down USAID, the U.S. humanitarian aid agency.
The Washington Post reports that DOGE has already begun investigating the education department’s operations.
Musk responded to these reports on X (formerly Twitter), asserting that while former President Ronald Reagan failed to abolish the department in the 1980s, Trump is on track to succeed.
Trump’s Education Agenda
During the 2024 campaign, Trump pledged to shift educational control from the federal government back to individual states, arguing that U.S. schools are underperforming globally and that the department wastes federal resources.
He has also been vocal about his opposition to liberal policies in schools. Last week, he signed executive orders targeting education policies on race, gender, and student activism.
Controversial Appointment
Trump has nominated Linda McMahon, former CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), to lead the education department.
Many analysts see this as a sign that Trump intends to downgrade or eliminate the agency.
Notably, McMahon’s husband, Vince McMahon, was once publicly body-slammed by Trump during a wrestling event, where Trump famously shaved his head.
