Trump Criticizes Bishop After Call for Mercy for Marginalized Groups

President Donald Trump has sparked controversy by referring to Washington National Cathedral’s Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde as “nasty” after she publicly urged him to show compassion toward migrants and LGBTQ children during an inaugural church service.
The bishop’s remarks came amidst Trump’s swift policy changes targeting diversity programs, immigration, and gender rights, signaling a sharp departure from the previous administration’s inclusivity agenda.
Diversity Programs Shut Down
In one of his earliest executive actions, President Trump ordered the immediate suspension of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) programs across federal agencies.
Employees in these offices were placed on paid administrative leave, and agencies were instructed to terminate DEI training, contractors, and online resources by Wednesday evening.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defended the move, stating, “President Trump is committed to ending DEI practices that divide Americans and restoring merit-based hiring systems. This is a win for Americans of all backgrounds.”
Criticism from the Pulpit
During the traditional inaugural church service, Bishop Budde criticized the administration’s policies, saying they sow fear among vulnerable communities.
Addressing Trump directly, she pleaded, “I ask you to have mercy on the children who fear losing their parents and on those in our country who now feel unsafe.”
Trump’s Response
In a post on Truth Social, Trump dismissed the bishop’s remarks, calling her “nasty” and accusing her of being a “radical left Trump hater.”
He further described her service as “boring and uninspiring,” demanding an apology from her and the church.
Aggressive Policy Agenda
In his first 24 hours, Trump signed a series of executive orders reversing many of his predecessor’s policies.
These include suspending asylum applications, enforcing strict immigration laws, and mandating the recognition of only two genders—male and female—within federal records.
Additionally, Trump hinted at imposing tariffs on China by February 1st, citing fentanyl trafficking as the reason.
Beijing has since vowed to defend its national interests, warning of the consequences of a trade war.
Trump’s aggressive start to his second term has reignited debates over his leadership style and policies.
As his administration pushes forward with its agenda, both support and opposition continue to intensify across the nation.
