Trump and Putin Hold Crucial Talks on Ukraine Ceasefire – Will It Lead to Peace?
In a high-stakes phone call on Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed a potential ceasefire in Ukraine, with the White House stating that the talks were “going well.”
The conversation, which began at 10:00 AM (1400 GMT), is part of Trump’s efforts to end the ongoing conflict. However, concerns are mounting in Kyiv and across Europe that Trump may concede too much to Putin, given his past admiration for the Russian leader.
What’s at Stake?
The negotiations come as Ukraine has agreed to a 30-day halt in fighting to engage in talks. But Putin has laid out several conditions, making the possibility of a lasting ceasefire uncertain.
Trump, on his Truth Social platform, acknowledged that while “many elements of a final agreement have been settled, much remains to be decided.”
Meanwhile, Putin delivered a strong anti-Western speech before the call, warning that Western nations would continue to undermine Russia regardless of any peace deal. He also mocked the G7, calling it too insignificant to “see on a map.”
Ukraine’s Response and Fears of a Weak Deal
Ukrainian officials remain skeptical. Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga insisted that Moscow must “unconditionally” accept a ceasefire, while President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that Putin’s true intention is to gain a better strategic position before halting attacks.
For over three years, Russia has carried out relentless drone and missile strikes, capturing large portions of Ukraine’s south and east.
Despite international pressure, Putin remains firm in his stance, rejecting NATO’s involvement as peacekeepers and opposing U.S. military aid to Kyiv.
Trump’s Controversial Approach
Trump’s approach to the Ukraine conflict has raised eyebrows. He previously had a heated argument with Zelensky at the White House, leading to a temporary suspension of U.S. military aid.
He has also suggested discussing territorial divisions and control over key assets, including the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.
As he pushes to fulfill his campaign promise to end the war, Trump continues to blame his predecessor, Joe Biden, for escalating tensions. On Sunday, he reiterated his stance, stating:
“It must end NOW.”
