On the morning of December 30, 2024, a deadly attack occurred in the Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, claiming the lives of at least seven people, including police officers and two civilians. The assailants, still unidentified, launched a violent assault during preparations for a burial ceremony scheduled for January 2, 2025. Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene, with gunfire erupting as the hoodlums ambushed security personnel and innocent bystanders.
The attack unfolded at the venue where the burial preparations were taking place, with the assailants opening fire indiscriminately. Some witnesses suggest that the violence may have been related to the hoodlums’ demand that no ceremonies, including burials, be held in the area without their approval. The gunmen then clashed with local security operatives, leading to a deadly exchange of gunfire.
In the wake of the assault, the Anambra State Police Command confirmed the deaths, including two unarmed civilians caught in the crossfire. A spokesperson for the police, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, shared that the Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam, had ordered a swift manhunt for the perpetrators. The Commissioner also expressed condolences to the families of the victims and the Ihiala community, vowing to bring those responsible to justice.
The investigation is ongoing, with the police continuing to piece together the details of the attack. Authorities are hopeful that the individuals behind this senseless violence will be apprehended swiftly.
As Anambra grapples with this tragedy, the authorities remain committed to ensuring that justice is served for the victims and their families.
