Tragic Accident on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Claims Driver’s Life, Causes Severe Gridlock

In the early hours of Wednesday, December 19, 2024, a fatal accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway resulted in the death of a truck driver and caused significant traffic disruptions.

The incident occurred on the Kara Bridge section of the expressway when a truck carrying steel coils and a 40-foot container lost control while attempting to avoid a collision with another vehicle. This maneuver caused the truck to overturn, spilling its heavy cargo across the roadway and completely obstructing traffic.

Emergency responders from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) arrived promptly at the scene. Unfortunately, the driver had already succumbed to his injuries, and his body was removed before their arrival. LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Damilola Oke-Osanyitolu, confirmed that the agency, in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps and the police, worked diligently to clear the impediments and restore the flow of traffic.

The accident led to a debilitating gridlock, with vehicular movement grinding to a halt from the Otedola Bridge to the OPIC end of the expressway. Commuters experienced significant delays, and the situation was further exacerbated by a separate accident in the vicinity involving three vehicles, which resulted in injuries to four individuals.

This tragic event underscores the critical importance of adhering to road safety regulations and exercising caution, especially on busy highways like the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances leading to the accident to prevent future occurrences.

Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased driver and all those affected by this unfortunate incident.
