A heartbreaking incident occurred on Saturday, December 28, 2024, on the Owo-Ikare highway in Ondo State, Nigeria, when a road accident claimed the lives of at least 13 people. The fatal crash, which took place around 10:14 am at Abule Panu, near the Ose Bridge, involved two buses.
The two buses were carrying a total of 14 people, but tragically, 13 of the passengers were burned beyond recognition. Only one person survived, albeit with serious injuries. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the tragedy, and the Sector Commander, Dr. Samuel Ibitoye, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life.
According to Ibitoye, the accident occurred when a bus traveling from Ikare experienced a tire burst, causing the driver to lose control. The bus collided head-on with another bus, which was transporting fabric from the Owo direction. Immediately after the crash, both vehicles erupted in flames.
Rescue operations were quickly carried out by the FRSC, the Police, and the Fire Service. The lone survivor was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Owo for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to the morgue of the same hospital.
In a statement, Ibitoye urged drivers to be patient and cautious on the roads, emphasizing the importance of maintaining vehicles to prevent such accidents. He also encouraged passengers to speak out against dangerous driving practices, highlighting that road safety is everyone’s responsibility.
This tragic event serves as a painful reminder of the dangers on Nigerian roads and the need for greater vigilance to prevent future accidents.
