At least seven lives were lost on Saturday when an explosion ripped through a convoy of commuters on the Maiduguri-Damboa Road in Borno State.
The tragic incident occurred when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), allegedly planted by Boko Haram insurgents, detonated along the dilapidated route that cuts through the infamous Sambisa forest.
The road, which has long been a danger zone, was being traveled by passengers escorted by military forces from Damboa to Maiduguri.
Eyewitnesses said the blast hit while the convoy was making one of its routine trips, a practice introduced by the Babagana Zulum administration to reconnect isolated local government areas like Chibok and Damboa. The road had previously been shut for years due to repeated terrorist attacks.
The military has been conducting IED scans on the route before every trip, with convoys scheduled only twice a week. Despite these precautions, the terrorists managed to carry out another deadly attack.
The number of injured victims is still being verified, but many were swiftly transported to medical facilities in Maiduguri for emergency treatment.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement as investigations continue. Security operatives are reportedly combing the area in search of more explosives or suspects.
