Kontagora, Niger State, was thrown into mourning as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Shafi’u Bawa, attached to the 61 Police Mobile Force (PMF), was found dead in an apparent suicide.
Sources say the officer’s lifeless body was discovered hanging from the ceiling of his room on Saturday afternoon.
His father, Mallam Usman Bawa, was the first to notice something was wrong before reporting the matter to the Kontagora Police Division.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Niger State Police Command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, stated:
“On 8/2/2025 at about 2 pm, it was reported that ASP Shafiu Bawa of 61 PMF Kontagora committed suicide by hanging himself on the ceiling due to a yet-to-be-ascertained reason.”
The officer’s body was later handed over to his family for burial. Meanwhile, the police have launched an investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
This incident has sparked conversations about mental health awareness, particularly among security personnel.
Authorities are urging officers to seek support when dealing with stress and emotional struggles.
