A devastating building collapse in Lagos has claimed two lives while 14 others were pulled from the rubble in a frantic rescue operation.
The tragic incident occurred on Oriwu Street, Lekki, where a three-storey building under construction suddenly gave way around 4 PM on Wednesday.
Rescue Efforts Underway
Emergency responders, including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), police, and fire services, rushed to the scene to conduct search and rescue operations.
Initial reports from LASEMA indicated that six individuals were rescued, though later updates confirmed 14 survivors had been taken to Lagos Island General Hospital for urgent medical attention.
According to Benjamin Hudenyin, spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, security operatives were immediately deployed to secure the site and assist with evacuations.
What Caused the Collapse?
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the collapse. While structural failures have been a recurring issue in Lagos due to weak regulations and substandard materials, officials are yet to determine the exact reason behind this disaster.

Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, confirmed that rescue teams, including Shark and Eagle Response Units, were actively working with heavy-duty excavators to locate any remaining victims.
Residents and eyewitnesses expressed concerns about the increasing number of building collapses in Lagos, urging the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) to intensify enforcement on construction standards.
As the search continues, authorities have assured the public that those responsible for any negligence leading to this tragedy will be held accountable.
