Tragedy in Lagos: Scavenger Dies in Grenade Explosion, Three Injured

A quiet afternoon in the Idi-Araba area of Mushin, Lagos, turned tragic when an explosion rocked Taiwo Street on Thursday, April 3, 2025. According to reports gathered by NIGPOST, the blast was caused by a scavenger unknowingly tampering with a live military-grade grenade while searching for scrap metal.

The scavenger, whose identity remains unknown, died instantly at the scene. Witnesses described the moment as terrifying, with smoke and confusion filling the air. Three other individuals nearby were injured and quickly rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The Lagos State Police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident. He explained that the police’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was alerted and arrived swiftly to secure the area.

“Upon inspection, it was confirmed that the explosion was due to mishandled military grenades. The victim, a scavenger, was attempting to dismantle one when it detonated,” Hundeyin said.

He added that the scene was carefully documented, and crucial evidence has been collected to aid further investigations. The body of the deceased has been taken to a public morgue for autopsy.

This heartbreaking event highlights the growing danger of unregulated scavenging in urban areas, especially when it involves hazardous or military waste.

Our thoughts are with the victims and their families. Let this serve as a wake-up call for stronger regulations and public awareness around handling unknown objects.
