A heartbreaking incident has shaken the town of Ekpoma in Edo State after an 18-year-old boy, Chinedu Abimbor, was reportedly shot dead by the police at a checkpoint.
The tragic event, which occurred on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, has sparked outrage among residents, with protests erupting as people demand justice for the young man.
How It Happened
Eyewitnesses say Chinedu was driving a Mercedes-Benz when police officers at a checkpoint attempted to stop him. When he allegedly failed to comply, one of the officers opened fire, fatally shooting him.
His younger brother, who was in the car at the time, was immediately arrested by the police.
A witness, speaking anonymously, expressed shock over the incident.
“It happened so fast. He was just a young boy, and now he’s gone. His family is devastated,” the witness said.
Protests Erupt as Youths Seek Justice
The killing has triggered widespread protests in Ekpoma, with youths taking to the streets demanding accountability. The protesters also visited the palace of the traditional ruler, HRH Anthony Ehizogie Abumere II, to call for intervention.
One of the protesters, Lucky Adaba, condemned the police’s actions, alleging that young men driving cars are frequently harassed.
“We went to the police station to ask what happened, but instead of answers, they teargassed us and started shooting,” he said.
Police Responds, Promises Investigation
The Edo State Police Command has reacted to the public outrage, announcing a full investigation into the incident.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, confirmed that the fatal encounter involved a joint security operation team and an unregistered Mercedes-Benz.
He added that the Commissioner of Police, Betty Otimenyin, has ordered the immediate withdrawal of three patrol teams involved and assured the public that justice will be served.
“We understand the pain of the family and the community. We urge everyone to remain calm as we conduct a thorough investigation,” the statement read.
