A devastating bridge collapse in Ecuador has claimed the lives of at least four people, with rescue operations still underway.
The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday when a 200-meter-long suspension bridge, packed with vehicles, gave way and sent multiple trucks, a car, and two motorbikes plunging into the Magro River.
The collapse happened about 50 kilometers north of Guayaquil, Ecuador’s major port city. Disturbing footage from the scene captured a truck hanging precariously on the remains of the bridge, while the submerged structure disappeared beneath the river’s waters.
Authorities initially reported one death, but by Friday, Ecuador’s National Secretariat of Risk Management confirmed that four bodies had been recovered.
One person remains missing as search teams continue their efforts.
Overloaded Bridge or Structural Failure?
The governor of Guayas province, Marcela Aguinaga, stated there were no prior reports indicating the bridge was faulty.
However, she suggested that excessive weight may have contributed to the disaster.
The tragedy comes amid Ecuador’s rainy season, which has already wreaked havoc across the country.
Recent floods and landslides have resulted in 20 deaths and extensive damage to infrastructure, including 45 bridges.
Authorities are now investigating the cause of the collapse, as families mourn their loved ones and residents demand answers.
