The Lagos State Safety Commission (LSC) and the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) have intensified efforts to enforce the ban on smoking in public spaces.
On Saturday, Lanre Mojola, Director-General of the LSC, stressed the health hazards of indoor smoking, including lung cancer and respiratory diseases, as well as the risks of secondhand smoke in shared areas like bars and lounges.
Highlighting the Lagos State Anti-Smoking Law of 2014, Mojola explained that designated smoking areas must not exceed 10% of the physical space in establishments such as hotels and nightclubs.
With the festive season approaching, he emphasized collaboration with business owners to ensure compliance and promote a healthier nightlife environment.
Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, General Manager of LASEPA, called on businesses to install smoke detectors, display smoking area signs, and comply with laws prohibiting smoking near children or selling cigarettes to minors.
Penalties for violations range from N10,000 for individuals to N500,000 for businesses, with stricter sanctions for repeat offenders.
Both agencies remain committed to protecting public health and establishing a smoke-free Lagos.
