President Bola Tinubu has called on political stakeholders in Rivers State to respect court rulings and uphold the rule of law to restore peace in the crisis-hit region.
The President made this appeal during a meeting in Abuja with leaders of the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF).
According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu emphasized that judicial decisions must be upheld for democracy to thrive.
“The Rule of Law Must Prevail” – Tinubu
Addressing the PANDEF delegation, Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to the rule of law.
“This is a nation governed by the rule of law. I should not be here as President without it. I have total confidence in our judiciary. Once the court has spoken, that is it,” he stated.
He urged PANDEF leaders to take proactive steps in ensuring that court rulings are implemented swiftly.
“Please go back home and help implement the court rulings within the shortest possible time. The ball is in your court. Help intervene and counsel the governor to pursue peace and stability,” Tinubu charged.
Political and Economic Implications of the Crisis
The ongoing political turmoil in Rivers State has raised concerns about the stability of the oil-rich Niger Delta region.
Tinubu warned that any disruption in the region could have far-reaching economic consequences.
“Yes, the Niger Delta is the goose that lays the golden egg. We must care for the goose; otherwise, we lose the golden egg,” he said, referencing the region’s vital role in Nigeria’s economy.
The President disclosed that his administration had foreseen the crisis and previously brokered a signed agreement between the conflicting parties. However, tensions have persisted despite these efforts.
PANDEF Leaders Call for Swift Resolution
PANDEF leaders, including King Alfred Papapreye Diete-Spiff and former Akwa Ibom Governor Obong Victor Attah, backed Tinubu’s intervention, warning that the crisis could escalate into a national security threat.
“Instability in Rivers State has far-reaching consequences on the peace and stability of the nation,” Attah cautioned.
The delegation urged the federal government to maintain its focus on regional development, highlighting issues such as power devolution, infrastructure, and environmental sustainability.
What Next for Rivers State?
Tinubu assured PANDEF leaders that his administration would not allow Rivers people to suffer due to political conflicts.
“The people of Rivers State will not suffer because of democracy. We worked together on it. They must be protected,” he vowed.
With court rulings in place and the President’s firm stance on law and order, all eyes are on Rivers State’s political actors to see whether they will heed the call for peace.
