Tinubu Urged to Reconstitute UNIZIK Governing Council Amid Leadership Crisis

A coalition of concerned groups has called on President Bola Tinubu to take urgent action in reconstituting the Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Anambra State.

The groups, comprising students, alumni, and education stakeholders, argue that the institution is in dire need of effective leadership to restore order and academic excellence.

Allegations Against Acting Vice-Chancellor

The coalition has accused the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Joseph Ikechebelu, of mismanagement, favoritism in appointments, and failure to address pressing concerns such as low staff and student morale.

They claim his leadership has led to academic stagnation and administrative inefficiencies.

The controversy follows the nullification of Professor Bernard Odoh’s appointment as substantive Vice-Chancellor, a decision that also saw President Tinubu dissolve the Amb.

Greg Mbadiwe-led Governing Council due to alleged irregularities.

Call for Presidential Intervention

Stakeholders argue that the absence of a properly constituted Governing Council has created a leadership vacuum, affecting the university’s growth and reputation.

According to Dr. Sampson Chikelu, a spokesperson for the coalition, “The institution needs a visionary leader who can drive its development and ensure academic excellence.”

The groups warn that failure to address the crisis could lead to mass protests and demonstrations, as they refuse to allow the institution to suffer due to poor governance.

A Critical Moment for UNIZIK

Nnamdi Azikiwe University has long been regarded as a top academic institution in Nigeria, and stakeholders insist that urgent action is needed to maintain its legacy.

They call on President Tinubu to act swiftly in appointing a capable and competent Governing Council to steer the university in the right direction.
