President Tinubu Renames Federal University of Education Kano After Maitama Sule
In a move to preserve the legacy of one of Nigeria’s most respected statesmen, President Bola Tinubu has officially renamed the Federal University of Education, Kano, to Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education.
Who Was Yusuf Maitama Sule?
Yusuf Maitama Sule was a renowned diplomat, politician, and nationalist whose influence shaped Nigeria’s political and diplomatic history. Born in 1929 and passing in 2017, his contributions included:
- Serving as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, where he played a vital role in the fight against apartheid.
- Holding the position of Chief Whip of the Federal House of Representatives (1954–1959).
- Leading Nigeria’s delegation to the Conference of Independent States in 1960.
- Serving as the First Federal Commissioner of Public Complaints (1976).
- Holding the office of Minister of Mines and Power.
Why the Name Change?
A statement by Presidential Spokesperson Bayo Onanuga highlighted that the renaming aims to honor Maitama Sule’s contributions to Nigeria’s development.
The President believes his patriotism, integrity, and dedication to public service should serve as an inspiration for future generations.
“The Federal University of Education, Kano, is one of seven specialized universities of education under the Federal Government.
This renaming not only celebrates Maitama Sule’s legacy but also strengthens the institution’s role in advancing Nigeria’s education sector.”
