President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s commitment to reforming Nigeria’s tertiary education system.
Speaking through the Minister of Education, Dr. Marufu Olatunji Alausa, at the University of Lagos’ 55th Convocation ceremony, the president highlighted various initiatives aimed at improving the sector.
Key Reforms in Education
Tinubu announced several reforms, including:
Removing universities from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).
Approving recruitment waivers for institutions.
Establishing the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to support deserving students.
Allocating a proposed N3.52 trillion to education in the 2025 Budget, the third-highest allocation.
“Our ‘Budget of Restoration: Securing Peace, Rebuilding Prosperity’ reflects our determination to stabilize the economy, improve lives, and position Nigeria for a brighter future.
These reforms aim to enhance the quality and stability of higher education while expanding access for students nationwide,” Tinubu stated.
Expanding Access to Education
The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has already benefited thousands of students, easing financial constraints and widening access to higher education.
Tinubu pledged to expand the program, ensuring that more students can achieve their academic goals without financial barriers.
Unity and Innovation as Pillars of Progress
The president urged Nigerians to embrace unity, calling it the country’s greatest strength. “Our diversity is not a weakness but a source of incredible richness. Let us harness this diversity to overcome challenges, seize opportunities, and build a Nigeria we can all be proud of,” he said.
Tinubu also encouraged graduates to apply their skills to drive innovation, foster sustainable development, and build a prosperous and equitable society.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Prof. Ogunsola, shared the institution’s progress over the past year, including:
Renovation of student hostels after more than a decade of neglect.
Students excelling in sports competitions.
Internship opportunities for three students at Bank of America, facilitated by global partnerships.
She assured attendees that the university remains committed to fostering excellence and tackling challenges with resilience.

The University’s Chancellor, Chief Wole Olanipekun, commended the graduates and encouraged them to utilize their skills and knowledge to become ambassadors of positive change.
