In a significant development, the Kano State Police Command has apprehended three individuals in connection with the possession of counterfeit currency totaling N129.5 billion. The arrest was disclosed today, December 10, by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the state, SP Haruna Kiyawa.
The fake currency, which was seized during the operation, includes a mix of foreign and local currencies. According to Kiyawa, the breakdown of the recovered counterfeit funds includes $3,366,000 in fake US dollars, CFA51,970,000, and N1,443,000. The total value of these fakes stands at an astounding N129,542,823,000.
The PPRO added that two of the suspects were arrested in possession of the counterfeit money, while the third individual, from whom the money was allegedly stolen, was also apprehended. All three suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting authorities in identifying the producers of the fake currencies.
Additionally, the police made several other significant recoveries during their operation. These included six live rounds of ammunition, three tricycles, eight motorcycles, and three parcels containing 175 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp. Further, the authorities confiscated 250 diazepam tablets, 278 sheep, and seven cattle.
The ongoing investigation is expected to uncover more details regarding the counterfeit currency network and other illegal activities tied to the suspects.
