FG Monitoring Simon Ekpa’s Trial in Finland.
The Nigerian Federal Government has confirmed it is closely following the legal proceedings of Simon Ekpa, a Nigerian-Finnish citizen and leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Ekpa was arrested by Finnish authorities on Thursday, November 21, 2024, on charges of inciting terrorism and promoting violence.
The Finnish District Court of Päijät-Häme has ordered his continued detention, citing probable cause.
Ekpa is accused of using social media to incite violence and terrorism, allegations that have raised international concerns.
In a statement issued on Friday, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the spokesperson for Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized that the government views the case as a crucial step in addressing IPOB’s activities and the broader impact of transnational actors on Nigeria’s national security.
Government’s Stance on Ekpa’s Activities
The Federal Government has previously exerted diplomatic pressure on Finland to act against Ekpa, linking his activities to violent incidents in Nigeria’s South-East region.
His rhetoric and actions have reportedly contributed to unrest and disruption in the country, making his arrest a significant development.
The ministry reassured Nigerians of its commitment to monitoring the case, stating:
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to confirm the arrest of Mr. Simon Njoku Ekpa, a Nigerian-Finnish citizen and prominent leader of the proscribed IPOB.
He has been charged with inciting terrorism and promoting violence. The Finnish court has detained him on probable cause for publicly inciting crimes with terrorist intent.”
The statement continued, “The arrest is a critical step in neutralizing the influence of transnational actors and their impact on our national security. We will continue to provide updates as the legal proceedings unfold.”
Ekpa’s arrest has sparked diverse reactions across Nigeria.
In Enugu, local authorities welcomed the news, expressing hope that it would reduce tensions in the region.
Meanwhile, some groups, including IPOB, have disowned Ekpa, distancing themselves from his actions.
The Federal Government is reportedly exploring extradition options to ensure Ekpa is held accountable under Nigerian law for his alleged role in promoting violence.
