The Emir of Yashikira in Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State, Umoru Seriki, has raised concerns over the increasing attacks by a terrorist group identified as ‘Mahmuda’, which he claims is now occupying several areas in Kwara North and parts of Niger State.
In a heartfelt interview with NIGPOST on Sunday, the traditional ruler expressed deep frustration, saying that the affected communities feel abandoned by both state and federal authorities.
“We’re demoralized and heartbroken by the government’s denial of the presence of terrorists in our domain. Our people feel left on their own,” Seriki lamented. “Despite our previous warnings, no one took us seriously, and now we’re forced to defend ourselves.”
According to the Emir, the group has carried out coordinated attacks in Baruten and Kaiama LGAs of Kwara, as well as the Borgu Kingdom in Niger State. He confirmed a recent incident where a security vehicle, purchased by the community for vigilante operations, was bombed by the terrorists. While the vigilantes survived, some suffered injuries.
“There were casualties on both sides, although the number wasn’t as high as 15. What’s circulating on social media is true—we are in a dangerous situation and praying for divine protection,” he said.
However, the Kwara State Police Command has refuted these claims. Last week, they dismissed reports of the emergence of a group called ‘Mahmuda’ and denied the alleged killing of 15 vigilantes.
In a statement issued in Ilorin, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, spokesperson for the command, said security assessments and surveillance in the affected regions had found no evidence of terrorist activity or mass casualties.
“The narrative about 15 vigilantes being killed is completely false,” the statement read. “There is no confirmed breach of internal security in the mentioned communities, and our community heads and vigilante leaders haven’t reported such incidents.”
The police further explained that security measures in the border areas near Kainji Lake National Park are intact and under full control. They urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information that could incite panic.
“The Kwara Police Command, under CP Adekimi Ojo, remains vigilant and committed to protecting all residents. We encourage people to report any suspicious activity through the right channels for swift action,” the statement added.
