Benue State is once again witnessing rising tensions as the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has alleged that criminal elements in Agatu Local Government Area (LGA) poisoned over 20 cows and rustled 200 more.
Speaking on the issue over the weekend, the Chairman of MACBAN in Benue State, Risku Muhammed, stated that 13 cows belonging to Fulani herders died instantly after being fed poisoned rice chaff, while seven others were undergoing treatment.
In addition, he claimed that on Thursday, over 200 cows were rustled by unidentified criminals, but swift intervention by security forces led to the arrest of one suspect, while others managed to escape.
Alleged Plot to Harm Herders’ Livelihood
According to Muhammed, a farmer in Ucha village deliberately laced the rice chaff with poison before inviting a herder to graze his cows on it. “It is disheartening that people would go to such lengths to harm innocent animals and disrupt peaceful coexistence,” he lamented.
He also praised the Chairman of Agatu LGA, Melvin Ejeh, for his swift intervention in addressing these concerns. Muhammed further revealed that several herders had suffered losses due to similar acts in Olegodege, Utigologwu, Egwuma, Akele, Okwtanobe, and now Ucha.
Authorities Respond to Crisis
In response, Agatu LGA Chairman, Melvin Ejeh, confirmed that he had received the complaint from MACBAN and assured the public that an investigation was ongoing. He also disclosed that a suspect had been arrested in connection with the poisoning.
“We have enjoyed relative peace in Agatu in recent times thanks to the intervention of the state government and security operatives. Unfortunately, some criminal elements are trying to disrupt that peace. However, the government is committed to ensuring stability,” Ejeh stated.
Ejeh also called for increased deployment of security operatives in Agatu to prevent further criminal activities.
Police Confirm Investigation
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Catherine Anene, said investigations were underway regarding the poisoned cows and the rustling of livestock.
She also highlighted the efforts of a Peace Committee working in Agatu to maintain order.
“We received reports about the poisoning of cows, and we have arrested a suspect. The investigation is still ongoing,” Anene said.
With tensions rising in the area, residents are calling on security forces to intensify efforts to prevent further hostilities between farmers and herders.
