Telecom Tariff Hike to Attract $150M Investment, Boost 4G Coverage – GSMA

The recent 50% increase in mobile tariffs in Nigeria is expected to drive significant investment and expand 4G coverage, according to the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA).

$150M Investment and Expanded 4G Coverage

A GSMA report, obtained by Leadership on Wednesday, revealed that the tariff adjustment could unlock over $150 million in fresh investments, pushing 4G coverage from 90% to 94% and providing mobile internet access to 9 million additional Nigerians.

💬 “The tariff increase will enable network expansion, bringing nearly 9 million more people online, with close to 2 million expected to adopt mobile internet, especially in rural areas,” GSMA Intelligence stated.

Economic Impact and Job Creation

Beyond telecom improvements, the anticipated investment is expected to:
✔ Boost Nigeria’s GDP by 2% by 2028
✔ Create nearly 2 million new jobs
✔ Generate an additional ₦1.6 trillion in tax revenue

The enhanced digital infrastructure is also set to accelerate Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) adoption, benefiting sectors like agriculture, healthcare, and transportation.

Regulatory Reforms Needed for Maximum Impact

GSMA’s Head of Sub-Saharan Africa, Angela Wamola, emphasized that while the tariff hike is a game-changer, further regulatory improvements are necessary to maximize its impact.

💬 “To fully leverage this policy, Nigeria must streamline Right of Way permits, implement a Critical National Infrastructure plan, and reduce telecom sector taxation,” she advised.

GSMA pointed to Kenya and South Africa as examples where similar reforms have improved digital access and economic growth.

The organization reaffirmed its commitment to working with the Nigerian government and industry stakeholders to ensure the country’s full digital transformation.
