In recent months, Delta State has become a hotspot for alleged extrajudicial killings, sparking anger and sorrow among its residents. Human rights groups, youth organizations, and concerned citizens have called for urgent reforms as the troubling trend continues to cast a shadow over the region.
Despite the nationwide #EndSARS protests in 2020—which famously began in Delta State to fight police brutality and harassment—young people remain frequent victims of security operatives’ alleged misconduct. Disturbingly, within the last two months, at least two youths have lost their lives under questionable circumstances, while another fights for survival after sustaining critical injuries.
A Community in Mourning
On December 6, tragedy struck in Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area, when a 17-year-old boy, Emeka Odogwu, was reportedly shot dead by a police officer for allegedly possessing fireworks. Eyewitnesses claim Emeka was fleeing when he was fatally shot in the head, leaving his family and community reeling in grief.
Earlier, on November 1, a Nollywood cameraman, Chimezie Opara, narrowly escaped death after being shot by members of Operation Delta Hawk—a state security outfit. Opara recounted how his team, returning from a late-night filming session, was ambushed and fired upon without warning. Mistaking the operatives for kidnappers, they tried to escape but crashed their vehicle. Opara sustained life-threatening injuries and required emergency surgery. Shockingly, rather than offer help, the operatives allegedly confiscated his recording equipment and abandoned him.
Voices of Protest
Community leaders and activists have condemned these actions, labeling them as gross violations of human rights. Comrade Victor Ojei, head of the Young Nigerian Rights Organisation, decried the conduct of security personnel, emphasizing that their actions contradict the Nigerian Police Force Order 237, which prioritizes non-lethal measures.
“The lives of our youths are being treated with disregard, and it is unacceptable,” Ojei stated. He called for accountability and stricter oversight to prevent further tragedies.
The Unfinished Fight Against Brutality
These incidents have rekindled painful memories of the #EndSARS movement, raising questions about the effectiveness of police reforms promised in its aftermath. For many, the persistence of such cases is a stark reminder that the fight for justice and accountability is far from over.
As Delta communities mourn their losses and survivors like Chimezie Opara strive to rebuild their lives, the cry for change grows louder. Citizens demand a future where security agencies protect lives rather than endanger them—a future where justice is not just a promise but a reality.
