The family of the late Taiwo Akinkunmi, designer of Nigeria’s national flag, has called on the Federal Government to honor his legacy by immortalizing him and providing employment for his children.
The Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Lanre Issa-Onilu, presented the cheque to the family at their Ibadan residence.
In a statement on Saturday, Akinkunmi’s son, Akinwumi Akinkunmi, expressed gratitude for the financial support but emphasized the need for lasting recognition.
He urged the government to implement the Senate’s resolution, which was championed by Oyo State lawmakers, to honor the late icon.
“The family of Late Pa Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, National Flag Designer, sincerely appreciates the thoughtfulness of the Federal Government of Nigeria for not reneging on its promise by honoring our patriarch.
We also acknowledge the Oyo State Government’s efforts in giving our father a befitting burial,” the statement read.
The family further urged the government to fast-track the process of immortalizing Akinkunmi, as proposed by Senator Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli (Oyo South), with support from Senators Abdulfatah Buhari and Yunus Akintunde, and endorsed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation during his condolence visit.
Additionally, they requested government employment for Akinkunmi’s children, stating that such a gesture would inspire patriotism and reinforce the importance of national service.
“It will be our greatest joy as a family if the children of the deceased are offered government employment.
This will not only honor his legacy but also encourage patriotism among Nigerians and teach younger generations the importance of serving their country,” the statement added.
The family reiterated their appreciation for the government’s recognition and support, noting that preserving the legacy of a national hero reflects a commitment to national unity and history.
