Tragedy struck in the Ajegunle-Powerline community of Akure North Local Government Area, Ondo State, as suspected herdsmen reportedly attacked a farm settlement, killing five laborers.
How the Attack Happened
The victims, identified as workers from Plateau and Kaduna states, were on the farm when the armed assailants stormed the area.
Eyewitness Akin Olowolafe, a local farmer, recounted that the attack happened around 3 PM on Tuesday while the laborers were working.
> “These Fulani herdsmen invaded the farm and suddenly started shooting. They killed five people before fleeing the scene,” he said.
Olowolafe added that the community had suffered repeated attacks from herdsmen, who frequently destroy crops while grazing their cattle.
> “We have reported their activities to the government and security agencies, but no action has been taken,” he lamented.
Eyewitness Account from a Survivor
Another survivor, Fidelis Daniel, who narrowly escaped, described the horrifying moment.
> “The attackers came armed and started shooting. I was inside the farm when I heard gunshots and ran for my life. It was God that saved me,” he said.
He confirmed that three of the deceased were from Plateau State, while two were from Kaduna State.
Police Confirm Investigation
Reacting to the attack, the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed that an investigation was underway to track down the perpetrators.
> “There was an attack on the community, and we are currently investigating. However, we cannot confirm the exact number of casualties at this time,” she stated.
Security Concerns in Ondo State – Call for Action
This attack is one of several incidents in Ondo State, raising concerns over farmer-herder conflicts and the safety of rural communities.
Many residents are urging the government to take decisive action to protect farmers and prevent further bloodshed.
