Rivers State is on edge as soldiers have taken control of the Government House in Port Harcourt, following President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency.

Uncertainty Surrounds Governor Fubara’s Whereabouts
It remains unclear whether Governor Siminalayi Fubara was inside the Government House when troops arrived at around 9 p.m.
The political standoff between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, has been brewing for months, with tensions finally reaching a breaking point.
Following the announcement, fear gripped the state capital as residents hurried home, anticipating possible unrest.
President Tinubu Justifies Emergency Rule
In a nationwide address, President Tinubu defended his decision, stating that all attempts at a political resolution had failed.
“By this declaration, the Governor of Rivers State, Mr. Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Mrs. Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the House of Assembly are hereby suspended for six months,” Tinubu stated.
He appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas as the interim Administrator, clarifying that the judiciary would continue functioning as usual.
Governor Fubara Responds, Calls for Calm
Reacting to the suspension, Governor Fubara urged Rivers residents to remain calm, vowing to protect democracy.
“Since assuming office, I have upheld my constitutional oath and prioritized the security and progress of Rivers State. Even amid this crisis, we remain committed to the rule of law,” he said in a statement.
Fubara also accused lawmakers loyal to Wike of undermining his administration, making governance difficult.
Backlash Over Tinubu’s Decision
The state of emergency has sparked widespread criticism from political leaders, legal experts, and civil society groups, who describe it as an attack on democracy.
Many argue that suspending elected officials contradicts constitutional principles.
