The brother of Naomi Silekunola, the estranged wife of the Ooni of Ife, has defended her actions in connection to the tragic children’s party held in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Speaking during a live Instagram session hosted by media personality Daddy Freeze, he stated that all relevant agencies were duly informed before the event.
Naomi Silekunola, alongside two others, has been remanded by the Iyaganku Magistrate Court in Ibadan.
They face charges of conspiracy, negligence causing harm, and failure to provide adequate security and medical facilities.
The stampede at the event claimed the lives of 35 children.
The brother emphasized that the party was properly planned and received approval from all necessary stakeholders.
> “This was not a first-time event for my sister. She has organized numerous events through her ministry.
For this particular event in Ibadan, all necessary agencies and stakeholders were involved. Unfortunately, despite our preparations, the tragedy occurred,” he said.
In a tearful viral video, Naomi’s mother, Mrs. Funmilayo Ogunseyi, pleaded for mercy and understanding. She described her daughter’s intentions as purely humanitarian and expressed sorrow for the loss of lives.
> “My child only came to Ibadan to help the needy. This was never our intention. Please, don’t let Naomi be imprisoned—she is innocent,” Ogunseyi implored.
She also highlighted Naomi’s decade-long philanthropic activities, which have included supporting vulnerable groups across Nigeria.
