Abuja – A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted activist and former AAC presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore bail set at ₦10 million with a surety of equal amount.
The ruling, delivered by Justice Musa Liman, requires the surety to own a landed property worth at least the bail sum.
The court also directed Sowore to surrender his international passport to the court’s Deputy Registrar and fulfill all bail conditions within 24 hours or remain in custody.
Sowore was arraigned on a 16-count charge by the police, primarily for alleged cybercrime offenses.
He was accused of making inciting posts on social media, including referring to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, as an “illegal IG.”
One of his posts, dated December 20, 2024, stated:
“The illegal IG of Nigeria Police Force, Kayode, will make the next #EndSARS inevitable! He is working tirelessly towards it.
Just a matter of time. #EgbetokunMustGo #Revolution.”
The police allege that these statements were meant to damage the IGP’s reputation and incite public unrest. They cited Section 24(2)(c)(ii) of the Cybercrime Act 2015 (amended 2024) as the legal basis for the charges.
Sowore had been detained at the Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) headquarters after rejecting an earlier administrative bail offer, which required a Level 17 civil servant as a guarantor.
He deemed the condition unreasonable.
The case continues as Sowore’s legal team works to secure his release.
