South Korea’s political landscape is in turmoil as the opposition files an impeachment motion against acting president Han Duck-soo. This follows a heated battle over the appointment of judges to the Constitutional Court, which will ultimately decide the fate of former president Yoon Suk Yeol.
The drama began on December 3 when Yoon declared martial law, sparking a crisis that led to his suspension and removal by parliament. However, for the impeachment to be fully ratified, the Constitutional Court must approve the decision. With three vacant judge positions, the court is unable to function at full capacity, and the opposition insists that Han must appoint new judges to resolve the deadlock. But Han’s refusal to make the appointments has deepened the divide, prompting the opposition to target him with an impeachment motion.
If the motion succeeds, it would mark the first time in South Korea’s democratic history that an acting president faces impeachment. The motion accuses Han of neglecting his duty by blocking the appointments and rejecting two key bills aimed at investigating the martial law declaration and corruption allegations surrounding Yoon’s wife.
This marks a dramatic chapter in a political saga that has already seen the impeachment of a president and continues to shake the very foundations of South Korea’s government.
