In a tragic incident, an airstrike by the Nigerian Air Force targeting terrorists in Lakurawa ended up hitting Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities in Sokoto State’s Silame Local Government Area. The unfortunate mistake, which occurred on December 25, 2024, claimed the lives of at least 10 civilians and left several others injured.
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, addressed the situation, urging civilians to avoid harboring suspected criminals. He explained that such actions could inadvertently make them targets of military operations. “We have individuals that still harbour them, and once you do that, you are making yourself a legitimate target,” he said.
Prominent leaders, including Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and ex-Governor Aminu Tambuwal, have expressed their condolences to the victims’ families. They also called for a comprehensive and impartial investigation to uncover the circumstances that led to this tragic event.
General Musa reiterated the military’s dedication to tackling security threats and called for enhanced regional cooperation to curb instability. He assured Nigerians that the Armed Forces remain committed to safeguarding the nation and would sustain their efforts to prevent such occurrences in the future.
