Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola Badmus, widely known as Portable, has been remanded at the Okekura Correctional Centre in Ilorin pending the fulfillment of his bail conditions.
This development followed his arraignment on Monday, April 14, 2025, over serious allegations including criminal defamation, cyberstalking, inciting public disturbance, and intimidation. These charges were filed based on a petition from fellow Fuji artist, King Saheed Osupa.
According to court documents, Portable was granted bail with conditions that include two sureties, each with a bond of N1 million.
One surety must be a top official of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN), while the other is required to possess landed property within a Government Reserved Area (GRA) and provide a valid Certificate of Occupancy.
After the court session, Portable was seen being escorted to the Oke-Kura Custodial Centre, accompanied by two of his wives, pending the perfection of his bail.
The controversy stems from a viral Instagram live video Portable did on March 19, 2025, during which he allegedly made derogatory and inciting remarks about King Saheed Osupa.
In the video, he accused Osupa of jealousy and sabotaging his music career, making statements such as, “this man dey try bring down my shine! He be like person wey dey chop snail with shell—him no get sense. Osupa na tortoise.”
King Saheed Osupa, in his petition dated March 21, 2025, described Portable’s words as defamatory and a threat to his public image, claiming the comments incited unrest among fans and damaged his reputation.
The case was brought forward by the State Intelligence Department (SID) of the Nigeria Police.
Investigating officer ASP Adeniyi James confirmed that Portable confessed during questioning and that the case falls under various legal statutes, including Section 392 (Criminal Defamation), Section 114 (Inciting Disturbance), and Section 397 (Criminal Intimidation) of the Penal Code.
Additional charges were based on the Cybercrimes Act of 2015 and the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law of 2020.
The case has been adjourned to April 30, 2025, with the presiding judge advising both parties to maintain civility throughout the legal proceedings.
