A deadly confrontation between the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), known as the Shi’ites, and the Nigerian Army has reportedly left at least five people dead in Abuja.
The clash occurred on Friday around Banex, Ademola Adetokunbo Crescent in Wuse 2 during a procession marking International Quds Day.
According to Sheikh Sidi Sokoto, a leader of the Shi’ite group, the participants were peacefully marching from a mosque at Banex Plaza after Jumu’ah prayers when security forces blocked their path with an armored vehicle and opened fire.
He insisted there was no provocation from the group to warrant such an attack.
However, the Nigerian Army provided a different account. Army spokesperson Maj. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu stated that the Shi’ite members became violent, disrupted public order, and engaged the troops, leading to an exchange of fire.
He added that while he was aware of the confrontation, he could not confirm the number of casualties.
This incident follows a security alert issued by the U.S. Embassy, warning its citizens of planned IMN protests in Abuja and other major cities.
