Shettima Seeks China’s Assistance to Tackle Insecurity

In a recent meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, called on China to provide support in addressing the escalating insecurity challenges in Nigeria.

Shettima made the request when hosting a delegation from China, headed by Mr. Zhang Qingwei, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC).

According to a statement by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Shettima emphasized that while peace and development are interconnected, Nigeria is committed to enhancing its security framework.

He highlighted the country’s focus on integrating advanced technology into its security measures and called for increased collaboration with China to strengthen the nation’s security architecture.

“We are investing in technology, and we need your cooperation and partnership to achieve our goals,” Shettima stated, underscoring the importance of a peaceful environment for national development.

He also voiced optimism that Nigeria would overcome its security challenges with the right support and strategic improvements.

The Vice President also acknowledged the growing trade relationship between Nigeria and China, which has reached impressive heights.

In 2023, bilateral trade between the two countries hit $22.6 billion, marking one of the highest volumes in Africa.

This trade continues to grow at an annual rate of 33%.

Shettima reaffirmed the long-standing friendship between Nigeria and China, which has lasted for over 53 years, and expressed his satisfaction with the strong diplomatic and economic ties.

He noted the reciprocal high-level visits, including President Bola Tinubu’s visit to China in September 2024, which have further deepened cooperation.

Further stressing the need to bolster relations, Shettima remarked, “Now is the time for greater South-South cooperation between our nations.”

He assured the delegation of Nigeria’s unwavering support for the One China policy.

On the Chinese side, Zhang Qingwei reciprocated Shettima’s sentiments, emphasizing the strategic partnership between the two countries.

He pointed out the significance of the recent elevation of Nigeria-China relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership, following discussions between Presidents Tinubu and Xi Jinping during the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in September.

Qingwei expressed China’s readiness to help Nigeria achieve its developmental goals, particularly in the areas of economic diversification and infrastructure development, areas which align with President Tinubu’s vision for the Nigerian economy.

The Chinese delegation included several key figures, such as the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Yu Dunhai, and senior members of the NPC, including Chio Bing and Wang Li-Sha.

This visit reflects a continued commitment to strengthening Nigeria-China relations, a partnership that has flourished over the years and promises further growth in the years ahead.
