Seven Killed in Niger Tanker Explosion

A tanker explosion in Mashegu Local Government Area, Niger State, has claimed the lives of seven people, leaving one person injured.

How the Incident Happened

According to the Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Abdullahi Baba Arah, the tragic accident occurred at Karamin Rami village around 6 PM on Tuesday.

The explosion was triggered when a tanker truck, struggling to maneuver on a bad road, overturned, spilling its Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) content into a nearby stream.

Unfortunately, the fuel came in contact with a water pump used by dry-season farmers working in their rice fields, sparking a devastating fire that spread back to the tanker, leading to the explosion.

Casualties and Response

  • Victims: Two men and five women lost their lives in the incident.
  • Injured: One person sustained serious burns and was rushed for medical treatment.
  • Authorities: Emergency responders have been deployed to assess the damage and provide relief to the affected families.

The accident has raised concerns over the poor state of roads in the area, with residents calling on the government to take urgent action to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
