Senate Removes Danladi Umar as CCT Chairman Over Misconduct
The Nigerian Senate has dismissed Yakubu Danladi Umar from his position as Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) under Section 157 (1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), citing gross misconduct and behavior unbefitting of his office.
The decision was reached after 74 Senators signed the motion, with 84 members in total supporting it.
The closed-door deliberation took place between 1:17 pm and 2:36 pm, led by Senate Whip Mohammed Tahir Monguno and Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele.
In the motion titled “Invocation of the Provision of Section 157 (1) of the Constitution for the Removal of the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal”, Senator Bamidele highlighted the role of the CCT in upholding public morality and accountability.
He expressed concerns over numerous allegations of corruption, absenteeism, and unprofessional conduct against Umar.
The Senate referenced Umar’s alleged involvement in a physical altercation, unexplained absence from office, and ongoing investigations by anti-corruption agencies.
It noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had already forwarded the nomination of Abdullahi Usman Bello as the new CCT Chairman, which the Senate confirmed in July 2024.
Umar’s removal clears the way for Bello to assume office officially.
