Senate Denies Suspending Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Over Sexual Harassment Allegations

By NIGPOST

The Nigerian Senate has dismissed claims that Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended for accusing Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment.

Contrary to widespread reports, the Senate clarified that Akpoti-Uduaghan was sanctioned due to violations of its rules, not because of any allegations against Akpabio.

Why Was Natasha Suspended?

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, in a statement on Saturday, explained that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension was based on her breach of Sections 6.1 and 6.2 of the Senate Standing Orders 2023 (As Amended).

He accused her of displaying unparliamentary behavior, disrupting proceedings, and refusing to sit in her assigned seat during plenary.

The Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges found her guilty of:

  • Defying Senate seating arrangements despite multiple warnings.
  • Speaking without recognition from the presiding officer.
  • Engaging in disruptive and disorderly conduct.

As a result, the Senate suspended her for six months but stated that the ban could be lifted if she submits a written apology.

The Misinformation Controversy

Following her suspension, Akpoti-Uduaghan claimed she was targeted for accusing Akpabio of sexual harassment.

However, Bamidele refuted this, stating that her petition did not follow proper Senate procedures and was never officially considered.

He described the reports linking her suspension to the allegation as false and misleading, urging the public not to be deceived.

Public Reaction and Concerns Over Democracy

The Advocacy for Integrity and Rule of Law (AIRL) has warned that the suspension could erode public trust in the Senate.

The group’s chairman, Mohammed Ibrahim Gamawa, urged the upper chamber to handle the matter carefully to avoid damaging Nigeria’s democracy.

AIRL also expressed concerns that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s constituents would be left without representation, calling on the Senate to reconsider its decision in the interest of democratic fairness.

Final Thoughts

As the controversy continues, Nigerians are closely watching how the Senate handles the case.

Will Akpoti-Uduaghan apologize and regain her seat, or will this dispute escalate further?
