The Nigerian Senate has confirmed Mark Okoye and Professor Abdullahi Shehu Ma’aji as the Managing Directors and Chief Executive Officers of the South East Development Commission (SEDC) and North West Development Commission (NWDC), respectively.

The confirmation followed the presentation of a report by the Ad-Hoc Committee on Regional Development Commissions, led by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Privatization.

Screening and Confirmation Process

President Bola Tinubu had earlier submitted a revised list of nominees for the Governing Boards of the Regional Development Commissions. The nominees underwent a rigorous screening process conducted by the Senate’s Ad-Hoc Committee.

During the session, there was a brief attempt by some Senators to invoke Order (1b) to delay the confirmation for further consultations. However, the motion was defeated, and the Senate proceeded to deliberate as a Committee of the Whole.

All nominees were subsequently approved, including the 14-member board of the NWDC, led by Alhaji Lawal Samai’la Abdullahi as Chairman, and the 18-member board of the SEDC, chaired by Dr. Emeka Nworgu.
